Jaguar Summer Camp
In collaboration with Texas A&M University at San Antonio
Reading is the best exercise for one's brain especially in a child; reading prevents slow development of the brain.
For six years, American Sunrise has collaborated with Texas A&M University at San Antonio to offer disadvantaged children a free educational summer camp. “Jaguar Camp” provides students with educational experiences that are fun yet challenging to the mind. We offer a learning atmosphere that incorporates hands on learning, and multi- sensory experiences for students. Jaguar camp has a strong emphasis on literacy as research shows that summer learning loss often results in low income students falling behind in reading achievement an average of two months. “Differences in a child’s summer learning experiences during his or her elementary school years can impact whether that child ultimately earns a high school diploma and continues on to college” – John Hopkins University
In an effort to limit summer learning loss, or the “summer slide” as others call it, we offer students in Pre-K through Sixth grade a cross-curricular thematic summer camp with many opportunities for hands on learning with a multi-sensory approach. This year, our theme was “Career Exploration.” Many dynamic guest speakers shared about their careers, including the skills and educational background necessary for students to pursue such a career in the future. We endeavor to help students dream big, and begin to realize that their future begins now- with education.
